Hot
on the heals of the U-12 boys who have just returned home from a
very successful tournament, the Donosti Cup Tournament, in San Sebastian
Spain, the girls left last week to compete in both the Dana Cup
tournament in
Denmark and also the Gothia Cup Tournament in Sweden. The Dana Cup
Soccer Tournament is Denmarks largest and the worlds
most international soccer tournament for young teams. This years
tournament, July 9-14th, 2001 was the tournaments 20th year and
had 25 countries participating. |

After
winning their group, the Tulis girls progressed into the final match
for 1st and 2nd place. The match was played in the main stadium
with much fanfare, music and a flag parade. It was a very exciting
experience for parent spectators and players. The girls Swedish
opponents, Triangelns IK, scored the first quick goal in the 1st
minute of play and by half time the score was 1-1. It was a very
close game until the final 15 minutes when the Tulis girls went
into action and scored 4 more goals. A memorable cup and medal presentation
followed. Andrea McLachlan from Maple Ridge, who has trained with
Tulis for the past 5 years, was nominated the player of the match. |

|
The
Tulis girls are no strangers to this level of competition. Back
in 1999, some of these girls competed with the Tulis School in the
Women's World Cup USA '99 Celebration Tournament in California.
The girls were both the youngest and smallest team in the tournament
and yet managed to come home with a second place win. |
| |
|
The
next leg of the girls' journey takes them to Sweden to compete in
the Gothia Cup Tournament that starts July 16th with approximately
40,000 people in attendance for the opening ceremonies and runs
through July 20th. This year's tournament will host 1,252 teams
from all around the world - an all time high record for this tournament! |
